Dog Walkers offer a great service to both you and your dog
A dog walker is a great way to get your dog out for some exercise and socialization if he is home alone all day.
The dog is usually walked for about half an hour — and if several dogs are walked at the same time — offers your pet the opportunity to socialize.
Dog walkers will walk a smaller dog for a shorter distance, while larger dogs may be walked – or run – for a longer and further distance.
If the dog walker is coming for your dog every day – while you are at work or away – you will need to give him access to the house with either a key or a garage door opener.
Before hiring the dog walker, take the time to meet with her and your pet(s) to determine if they make a good fit.
A professional dog walker will want to discuss the schedule you require, the dog’s health and temperament.
For example, is your dog friendly with other dogs or do you prefer he takes a solo walk.
Also open to discussion:
- health concerns
- food or treat allergies
- favorite toys
- how your dog reacts to children, traffic, birds, squirrels, cats, and anything else that may be encountered during the walk
The discussion should be thorough for the safety and comfort of your dog; and for the ability of the dog walker to feel confident he can meet your dogs needs.
Expect to pay more for solo walks. Ask about their fees, if the walker has insurance and referrals. Ask if they offer a discount on their walking fee when walking a second or third dog from the same home. Also ask the dog walker about discounts if the dog will walked every day.
