Who is Walking the Alpha Dog ?

It is important to let everyone know who’s in charge.

Seems like things are nice and balanced around here, then some dog’s have to start acting out and getting the humans in a tizzy.

Recently a friend of my Mistress was house sitting and caring for two dogs — a terrier mix and a schnauzer.  As she took them on a walk in the neighborhood, the dogs bounded ahead of her on their leashes – barking at neighbors, chasing squirrels and pulling her the whole way. They were having a blast!

When she encountered another dog walker, though,  the two dogs became aggressive towards the third dog and nearly tore the leashes from her hands.  “It took everything in me to hold on to their leashes as they pulled me towards that dog.”  Thankfully the other dog walker was alert of the situation and was able to stop what could have been a tumble of fur and skin.

Cesar Millan "The Dog Whisper" Magazine

So my Mistress remembers to tell her about Cesar Millan of “the Dog Whisperer”.  Hey, he’s a good guy and all – I got nothing against him and he has helped some dogs lead happier lives… but I don’t like her too get any ideas.

You know what I mean, you have to play the game… you have to keep them thinking they are in charge  :)

Anyway, Millan tells humans that it is important to not let their dog walk ahead — especially when meeting up with other dogs.   Keep the dog to the side and behind as you walk, sending the dog the message that you – the human – is the Alpha dog or pack leader.

I guess the suggestion helped her friend in taking care of those dogs. So, I’m happy about that.

Some dogs just need to be reminded how to play the game.

Well, I gotta go…. I need to  hide the remote… see ya! ~ Max
